The final in the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas! I really wanted to finish this quick but at the same time wanted it to last forever. This is going to be a bit more of a ramble than a review.
Kingdom of Ash follows on from where Empire Of Storms left off, with Aelin being Maeve’s hostage. It does border on some Game of Throne violence here which I’m ok with but some might not. We’re definitely veering away from young adult territory here.
The rest of the characters are split up at the start. Aedion and the majority of the armies are up in Terrasen, fighting Morath. Dorian, Manon and the rest of the thirteen are trying to recruit the Crochens. Rowan, Lorcan, Gabriel and Elide are trying to find where Maeve has taken Aelin. And Chaol is on his way back to the continent with his new wife Yrene and the army he has persuaded to fight.
With so many characters to follow, the story is mainly action with a lot of battles. The final battle did remind me a bit of the Battle of the Pelennor Fields at Minas Tirith. Having another army turn up was a bit like the Rohirrim arriving (part of the film that always makes me really emotional!) and then with the rest of Morath arriving was like the Haradrim arriving on the oliphaunts. This is not a bad thing. If anything it just made me want to watch Lord of the Rings again!
Towards the end I did end up feeling all the emotions. I won’t give away what, but it did break my heart. Again, Maas, like George R R Martin, isn’t afraid to kill off characters! I also liked that Maas showed Aelin having ptsd after the horrific events she had to endure. Normalising that it’s ok to not be ok.
The ending wrapped everything up nicely. I’m glad there wasn’t a “10 years later” chapter like lots of series like to do. The ending definitely left me satisfied!
It’s quite hard to write about without spoilers but overall I think it was a very good end to the series and I’m very sad I won’t be able to read it again for the first time! I do now own A Court of Thorns and Roses series so I will be reading that soon!
What did you think of the ending?
